While these models significantly reduce the computational resources required for model execution and the simulation results from individual cells correlate well with the results of higher fidelity models and experimental data , their complexity, computational burden and the need for physical data for parameterization still remains an impediment for scaling-up individual cell models to a complete battery system model.
A number of recent publications advocate the use of equivalent circuit models (ECMs) as the most appropriate trade-off between electrochemical models and, at the other end of the spectrum, simply modeling the battery as an empirical function.
Parameterization of the cell model typically employs standard test methods such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and high power pulse characterization (HPPC) .
This approach is limited by the difficulty in unambiguously interpreting the circuit elements.
