It improvedstudent interaction, communication and social skills and built more positive attitudes towardslearning compared with the traditional methods.

Developing student behaviour andpersonality was, therefore, an important additional feature.

The study illustrated that cooperative learning strategies help to solve problems faced byteachers in classroom management.

As expected, the research showed that outcomes differed from case to case and from onesituation to another.

No teaching method is the best, but it is recommended to provide teacherswith professional training programmes to apply more developmental teaching methodseffectively and to modify mathematical textbooks and teachers' guides for the use of differentteaching methods.

It is recommended that more research be carried out in different fields ofstudy to concentrate on improving the quality of learning and enhancing problem solvingskills.

Lessonobservations were conducted within the research programme to evaluate the implementationof the cooperative learning strategies and teachers' and students' responses towards it.

On the other hand, genderdifferences examined in the study showed that, despite female students achieving betterresults, male students actually displayed more positive attitudes toward mathematics. The second chapter consists of a review of the literature regarding the history of cooperative learning, the fundamental theoretical underpinnings of cooperative learning, major cooperative learning methods, basic elements of cooperative learning, and its positive outcomes. This chapter also elaborates on key issues in implementing cooperative learning in the classroom and the cultural appropriateness of cooperative learning in China. This enriches the cognitive, competitive and social interaction and, hence, developsoutcomes in the cognitive, affective, motivational and social domains. The study proved thepositive impact of applying such strategies in enhancing mathematical achievement andpromoting problem solving skills compared with the impact made by traditional teachingstrategies. The study investigates the rationale and value of using cooperative learning strategies in themathematics classroom with special reference to its effectiveness in promoting problemsolving skills and levels of achievement in mathematics.Inaddition to the quantitative methodology, the study also addressed qualitative issues. All theteachers involved in the experiment, and a sample of students, were interviewed. The researcher recognises that teachers and students who apply cooperative learning strategiesmight be strongly motivated and be more enthusiastic by the very fact of trying a newstrategy.Consideration was, therefore, given to this point at all stages.
