Satine is to belong to the Duke (Richard Roxboro), who will make Satine a real actress, and bring the Moulin Rouge and Zidler the fame he craves by producing a musical, set within the musical. Satine (Nichole Kidman) is the courtesan from the Moulin Rouge. He manages to persuade Harold Sidler (Jim Broadbent) to give him the deeds to the Moulin Rouge, which gives him more power and more knowledge to what goes on. My favourite character is Talouse-Maung (John Leguizamo) - an over-the-top eccentric midget who unravels the Moulin Rouge story. Smash hits from the movie, such as "Lady Marmalade" and "Your song", Moulin Rouge had an enormous amount of marketing, let alone the "cameo appearance" of Kylie Mo... The beginning of Moulin Rouge is set as a narrative, with the lead male part Christian (played by Ewan Mc Gregor), narrating the story line and telling of how his one true love is dead.
The fates conspire to throw these Christian and Satine together, but the fates are once again cruel, for Satine is dying of consumption As the passion play takes shape, so does the love between Satine and Christian, leading to an inevitable showdown between the Duke and him. Within the film Moulin Rouge the character of Satine is defined by her relationship with men and their behavior towards her. As the owner of the Moulin Rouge, Harold Zidler takes on the role as the father figure to Satine. Although Zidler seems to control Satine, as the star of the Moulin Rouge it is evident she also has power over him. Individually they represent great assets to one another, and in turn work together to build the Moulin Rouge into a successful theatre. As Satine performs at the Moulin Rouge the audience is introduced to the Duke. Baz Luhrmann directed such films as Strictly Ballroom, Romeo and Juliet and the musical Moulin Rouge. In Moulin Rouge commences with the opening of a red theatre curtain. Moulin Rouge is obviously set in the world of the "Moulin Rouge" and as with Strictly Ballroom when we do leave the confines of the Moulin Rouge the shot is totally devoid of all colour. Like Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge has vast contrasts in colour especially when there are scenes outside the world of the Moulin Rouge. Moulin Rouge also provides some gaudy characters who supply a lot of amusement.
Skirts swish and swirl, sequins sparkle, suspenders snap, colours dazzle, textures compete and elegance abounds.
Kitsch excess is the order of the day, with every costume elaborately and minutely detailed.
