Essay On Blackberry Picking By Seamus Heaney

The Second Star to the Right“ Second star to the right and straight on till morning” In the beloved story Peter Pan, Peter’s preservation of his childhood innocence through a make believe world of Neverland, that’s full of pirates, mermaids, and many more things to create a child’s world of play, and never growing up.

The picking of the berries slaughtered the warmth of summer just like Peter’s world of Neverland destroyed the real youth of Wendy Darling and her brothers. They returned home and lost that childhood innocence that Peter clang onto so dearly. In Heaney’s metaphoric poem, the illustrated life in the first stanza flows from the berries, to the symbols in life that represents the cutting of life, and the amount of time between being harvested from the bush—to being enclosed in a jar. While introducing the tone of the second stanza, this allusion to Bluebeard illustrates the newly murderous hands “sticky” with fresh juice that has taken away that moment forever. But discoveries made in the second stanza alter previous findings. You ate that first one and its flesh was sweet Like thickened wine: summer's blood was in it Leaving stains upon the tongue and lust for Picking. Then red ones inked up and that hunger Sent us out with milk cans, pea tins, jam-pots Where briars scratched and wet grass bleached our boots.Heaney’s glowing imagery, eloquent metaphor, and allusion, aid to carry the tone of the narrator picking blackberries. These descriptions snap a blissful photo of the wonderful summer that the narrator tried so desperately to keep, but just as Peter discovered when Wendy and her brother grew tired of Neverland, you cannot keep life sealed in a jar.Feels like no one cares but that's not what the truth bares as she stands there next to him oh if she just knew what could of been. And as the day falls at least it was back then it could of been more why'd you let yourself go? When you used to be a pleasent sight to see I blinked who could of thinked?
