To meet prerequisites for advanced study, students must take courses in general and organic chemistry; human anatomy and physiology; molecular and cellular biology; microbiology; statistics; calculus; and English.
Four-year degrees incorporate more general education and liberal arts classes, while two-year programs are focused on courses relevant to the field.
Candidacy Status: New HIM associate, baccalaureate and master degree programs applying for Candidacy Status after March 1, 2019 must implement the new 2018 AHIMA HIM Curricula Competencies by the time of application submission.
Accredited programs beginning in the 2020-2021 program review cycle must have the 2018 AHIMA HIM Curricula Competencies implemented in all courses. The Self-Assessment documentation will be due in the CAHIIM Accreditation System in 2021 by the assigned date.
