Another Country Essay

Explain in what ways “In Another Country” is a story of ironies.

In the story In Another Country, one of Hemingway’s greatest themes is the implausibility of war, focusing on the fate of the soldiers in the aftermath of war, when they experience the tragedies and futility of their lives.

Granville Hicks characterized the novel as “explosive,” but not artless or out of control.

has come to seem less explosive and more perceptive, and Baldwin’s own opinion that it was perhaps his best novel is more clearly justifiable.

The three images of irony discussed above, though not exhaustive, evidence the implausibility of war and the cruel fate of the soldiers after war.

Mixed reviews tended to praise strong scenes or important ideas but to criticize Baldwin’s art, accusing him of a weak plot, poorly realized characters, or too personal a tone.

The first-person narrator, an American, visits the hospital daily for rehabilitation treatments, and spends the rest of his time with a group of Italians, drinking and talking about the war.

At the hospital each day he sees an Italian Major whose hand has been injured, and who is receiving treatments. All of the Italians and the American says the narrator “felt held together by there being something that had happened that they, the people who disliked us, did not understand.”(3) The Major, whose treatments took place at the machine next to the American, is portrayed as being every bit the professional soldier.

Negative reviews tended to characterize the novel as a personal polemic excusing or even glorifying homosexuality and pushing Baldwin’s supposedly idiosyncratic racial agenda.

The most positive reviews tended to argue that the central themes of the novel were universal rather than personal and local.
